Giving the gift of good health during reinforced lockdowns

The situation in Nepal has been disastrous since the nation entered strict lockdowns at the end of March. These lockdowns meant that our children’s families, where parents were mostly migrant workers, were forced out of work. Many families were not able to buy food or necessary supplies because of their dire lack of funds and because of the strict lockdowns that only allowed individuals to leave their home at certain times of the day.

This first phase of strict lockdowns was finally eased up on June 21, 2020. Last week, however, after over 1,000 new COVID-19 cases were reported in a single day, the Nepali government reinstated strict lockdowns in the Kathmandu Valley area, where the families we serve reside. These restrictions mean that no private transport will be allowed in the street. Individuals can only go out to buy food and other necessary items in the morning, but otherwise, even pedestrians are not allowed in the streets.

BSF staff will continue to work to provide these families with food, hygiene products, and other necessary supplies to these families, but as we approach the beginning of a new school year, it has become clear that our children will need more. As COVID-19 rages through Nepal and surrounding countries, Mitrata recognizes that monitoring and tracking our children’s health and providing important health infrastructure resources is a top priority this year. As such, we will be conducting health checkups for every one of our children this year. As it stands, we are 26 checkups short: $3,900 away from our goal.

If you are able, please consider giving to help contribute to this goal. Your donation during this time will mean the continued health and safety of our children and their families.
