A Night of Joy and Connection: Celebrating the Special Bond Between Sponsors and Children

Shortly after arriving in Nepal, a cherished tradition occurs every year: a special dinner that brings together Mitrata’s sponsors and their sponsored children. This long-awaited event is filled with anticipation and excitement as sponsors and children finally get to sit across from each other, sharing stories and enjoying a meal. For some, this is the first face-to-face meeting after years of exchanging letters. It marks a joyful reunion for others, rich with familiar smiles and shared memories. Regardless of the circumstances, the evening is always filled with happiness. Though it may begin with a touch of shyness, it doesn’t take long for smiles, good food, and laughter to break the ice, filling the room with warmth. The quotes and photos below capture the heartfelt moments and joy that make this gathering truly special.

Meeting Purnima! Her name means ‘rising moon,’ and she truly shared her gentle light that evening. She is smart, funny, inquisitive, and confident, which made our initial meeting both comfortable and fun. She is making the most of every opportunity that Mitrata and BSF provide to become her best self. I look forward to many years of following her journey and the light she shares!

This was the first time Chandra and I met. After over 15 years of exchanging small notes, along with pictures and updates about Chandra from Mitrata, I finally had the chance to meet her in Nepal. The meeting was both magical and memorable. The group setting was relaxed and welcoming, and Mitrata’s expertise in embracing cultural diversity was exceptionally helpful. Supporting underprivileged children in our world is one of our highest responsibilities as human beings. Thank you, Mitrata, for providing that opportunity.

I began sponsoring Bikash Tamang seven years ago. Unfortunately, responsibilities in the United States kept me from visiting Nepal until now. After many letters exchanged, I must say that letter writing is essential for truly getting to know your sponsored child. Many of Bikash’s characteristics were just as I had imagined during our first meeting. His kind, gentle nature was fully evident. An in-person connection solidifies all the thoughts and feelings we have shared through writing over the years. Having the opportunity to discuss Bikash’s education and how he feels about his chosen path was especially valuable for me. His happiness as he moves forward with his chosen career is incredibly important. Additionally, being able to give Bikash a hug was a moment of pure joy. I can hardly describe how I felt when he said, ‘I miss you,’ as we parted. In closing, it is truly life-changing for all sponsors who have not yet been able to visit their sponsored child and see Nepal. If you have the chance to visit, you will not regret it
