Why is Providing Healthcare so Important?
In Nepal, healthcare is not free. Many of our families are generally not able to afford regular medical care or even necessary surgeries and medications. The economic devastation of the pandemic has only made the situation worse. Before the pandemic, another U.S. based nonprofit, Karma Thalo Foundation, (KTF) held an annual medical clinic for our children, their families, and BSF staff, serving around 150 people at any given time. Unfortunately, KTF doctors have not been able to travel to Nepal. So our children are now particularly in need of checkups and extra healthcare services such as, dental care, braces, vaccinations, glasses and regular annual exams. Surgeries or treatments for unexpected health issues are also needed. We are working hard to provide these services to our children.
Last month, our NGO partner, Bhuvaneshwori-Satyal Foundation (BSF), was able to take many of our children for a dental checkup to a local dentist to ensure they are still healthy and to receive dental care such as cleanings and fillings.
According to BSF, the first children to receive dental check-ups were the “Contact Center kids followed by our kids attending Vibhuti School and Reliance Residential school.” The staff at BSF were often busy transporting our children to and from medical appointments, navigating public transportation and crowded Kathmandu streets. We are very thankful for their dedication to the children’s well-being.
Thanks to the medical clinic work Karma Thalo Foundation has previously done in Nepal, the staff at BSF and our children have gained a better understanding of the importance of maintaining good dental hygiene and regular dental check-ups. Healthy teeth are just one of the ways in which we ensure the overall health and well-being of our children every day.
