Warmest of Reunions

Shortly after arriving in Kathmandu, six jet-lagged sponsors went to dinner with their sponsored children in a beautiful open-air restaurant in Thamel, a bustling area in the heart of the city.  The fatigue left over from days of travel quickly slipped away, replaced by joyous laughter, long anticipated hugs, and the joining of communities from opposite sides of the globe who think of each other often and wait in anticipation for just this day.  For some it was a reunion and a time to catch up.  For others it was a first meeting, shy and tentative adults and kids finding the words that would create a bond built of understanding and mutual appreciation.  For all, hearts were filled, smiles were plentiful, and emotions ran deep.  Sponsored children learned more about those who support their education and care, and sponsors saw the impact of their dedication and generosity.

For myself, it was a second meeting with Bikash, an amazing young man in the 10th grade who, I learned, has changed his hoped-for educational focus from aeronautical engineering to computer science.  Glancing round, I saw sponsors and kids huddled together sharing details of their lives, exploring their dreams for the future, and giggling as they shared bits of fun.  I couldn’t help but smile through the entire evening.  After our meal we took some pictures, sponsors and kids beaming for the camera, joking as they posed in funny ways, and when the time came, having difficulty saying goodbye for the evening.  Walking back to our hotel we shared stories from the lives of our sponsored children, and anyone passing us on the crowded street would have seen the joy in our eyes and the fullness of our hearts.

Sponsorship with Mitrata is more than just providing education and care.  It’s providing hope, opportunity, and a supportive community.  As sponsors we offer the resources necessary to obtain the tools the kids need to thrive.  But what we gain is just as valuable.  We are rewarded with the peace and gratitude that comes with selfless benevolence.
