Jewish Passover in Kathmandu

On the auspicious day of the April full moon, which is the Nepali festival of Buddha Purnima or Buddha Jayanti, we celebrated Passover in honor of Board member, Rick Hendin. He led a group of us through the Passover discussion and explained the meaning of the rituals of this important holiday to the Jewish people. BSF staff, Sarita and some of the children cooked much of the day and Leena and Yogesh Satyal joined us for a delicious Nepali style meal of rice, beans, mushrooms, vegetables and special treat of vegetable pakora. But of course we added the matzo which everyone enjoyed! We topped it off with Nepali sweets called barfi and yogurt with cinnamon. Our discussion included explanation of how Moses led the Jewish people out of Egypt, the plagues visited on the Egyptian people by God and the meaning of freedom and slavery. We all enjoyed the Nepali translation of words and we had lots of laughs trying to understand each other. It was a wonderful evening spent together in friendship and joy.
