What does it mean to Fund-A-Need?

This year, at our Saturday, April 15, Trivia Night, we will be fundraising for both necessity and fun! During the event, we will have a Fund-A-Need auction that will give attendees the opportunity to provide the children at the new Contact Center with clean water, a multi-day discovery trip for 25 older children, and a much-loved Contact Center field trip to the Fun Park that will include pizza and ice cream.

Although the auction will take place during the event, you can donate to the Fund-A-Need anytime before, during, or after the event here:

Auction Items:

CLEAN WATER FOR CONTACT CENTER

Water tanks can be seen on the roof of almost every house in Kathmandu.

Climate change and poor infrastructure in Kathmandu, Nepal have caused the wells that held the city’s water supply to dry up. Water is a costly expense, and is only brought in from the outlying villages every two months (six times a year). Many of our Contact Center children’s families must ration water while they wait for the next water delivery. Additionally, our new Contact Center is a wonderful space with four bathrooms and a kitchen that are utilized daily for drinking, cooking and bathing. This means that we must purchase truckloads of water to keep the water supply plentiful for the students and staff to use every day.

SEND 25 OLDER CHILDREN ON A DISCOVERY FIELD TRIP

The majority of our children have not had the opportunity to travel outside of their village or the area of Kathmandu where they reside. Besides travel to and from school, their sense of their country is very limited. We want to change this by broadening their view and empowering them to discover more about their culture, history, and the spectacular scenery of Nepal. This year, we would like to send 25 of our older children along with five BSF staff to the second largest city in Nepal, Pokhara. Pokhara is located at the base of the Annapurna mountain range, on the shore of Phewa Lake. The trip will include day treks in the mountains, a visit to the Mountain Museum and local temples, and boat rides on the lake. It will be a four day, three night trip and the cost includes bus tickets, lodging, and meals for 30 individuals.

Goal: $8,000

FUN PARK PASSES & ICE CREAM

This Fall, we would like to host another ice cream social, and a pizza/momo party for our children. Pizza and momos are very rare and costly treats for our children, parents, and teachers. (Momos are a delicious dumpling that is either steamed or fried and stuffed with vegetables or meat.)

Additionally, every year during our sponsor trip, the trip attendees accompany our Contact Center children to the Kathmandu Fun Park. It is a time of joy and laughter for our Sponsors and Children as they ride the rides, and spend time with one another.
