Happy Tihar to All!
It is Tihar in Nepal again this year, and I am here in the USA, missing all my friends, the Mitrata children and the BSF staff. So, of course, my mind goes to last year’s Tihar celebration with everyone!
Tihar, the festival of lights, is a five day Hindu celebration in Nepal which includes honoring the goddess of prosperity, Laxmi, and the crow. The dog and the cow are celebrated on different days, and those ceremonies are marked by beautiful light displays all over the city.
The animals are draped in garlands and elaborate rangolis, designs made of rice, sand, colorful dyes and flowers are made on the doorsteps. Wonderful offerings of food and altars to honor Laxmi are made.
One of my favorite days in Tihar is Bhai Tika, when sisters honor their brothers with ceremonies including tika and gifts and when families gather to enjoy delicious food. Last year, Yogesh and I became brother and sister in a lovely ceremony during Tihar.
While I can’t be with our friends and family in Nepal this year, I am deeply honored and grateful for our wonderful connection and fondly reminisce celebrations in years past. In this time where we are separated from loved ones due to the pandemic, it is good to remember those joyous moments. Below are some photos from last year’s celebration. with my dear friends in Nepal. My heart is with all of you!
